United Nations General Assembly Special Session On Drugs

The illicit use of drugs is a global problem, one that has a hand in taking countless lives every year. While each nation deals with drug use in their own way, it is fair to say that we can all learn a lot from each other. In April of 2016, the United Nations General Assembly will hold a Special Session (UNGASS) on drugs. The Special Session will be an opportunity to have “a global and in-depth” discussion about drugs, the most important such event in almost 20 years.

In order to prepare for the event, the UN has released an online survey that should not take more than 15 minutes. The UN is encouraging organizations working on drug-related issues to participate.

In 2009, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime released a policy document "Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem." The policy included a set of goals and targets for drug control which the organization hopes to be achieved by 2019.

Organizations involved in the field of drugs and/or drug use, based in North America, have until November 20, 2015, to complete the survey. The responses will be compiled and presented to delegations from the international community in preparation for UNGASS; the responses could help the UN achieve their goals.

The Special Session is to be held from April 19 - 21. The event will include a general debate and five interactive, multi-stakeholder round tables.

Stay tuned, we will follow this story.
