The "Typical" Drunk Drivers - Young Males Who Binge Drink

Driving under the influence is a dangerous act that can affect an untold number of people. Those who get behind the wheel with alcohol in their blood risk not only their lives, but the lives of others as well. Despite heavy deterrents implemented by state governments, such as jail time and heavy fines, many people feel that they are sober enough to drive - a gamble that can have dire consequences.

New research suggests that more than 4 million Americans admitted to driving drunk in the last month, almost 2 percent of American adults, HealthDay reports. The government report, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), showed that young adult males with a history of “binge drinking” were most likely to drive under the influence.

Binge drinking is often defined as having five or more drinks (male), or four or more drinks (female), over a 2-hour period. Dr. Scott Krakower, an alcohol abuse specialist, agrees that binge drinking is a major problem among young people and encourages people to seek support for unhealthy drinking practices, lest they risk the lives of others, according to the article.

"Binge drinking is extremely problematic amongst young adults and the college-age population, and is a leading factor in alcohol-impaired driving," said Krakower, assistant unit chief in psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, N.Y.

"Individuals should not be afraid to seek help if they have a drinking problem," he said. "Bottom line: if one is drinking, they should never drive a motor vehicle. They are putting innocent lives at risk."

Every year, there are an estimated 121 million cases of drunk driving, according to the CDC report. The findings showed that 4 percent of adults engage in binge drinking.

  1. If you ask me, binge driving is equally dangerous as drunk driving. People often don’t understand this and do binge driving. When I worked with a DUI lawyer, I have seen how dangerous and fatal binge driving can be. I always say everyone to do safe and responsible driving.
