July 4th is the Deadliest Holiday

Maintain. Be cool. Don't make eye contact.

Independence Day is less than 24 hours away and it goes without saying that the roads will be more dangerous than usual. Research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) indicates that July 4th continues to be the deadliest day on the road for all Americans.

Despite the best efforts from law enforcement nationwide, more than 630 people were killed on July 4 from 2008-2012, according to the IIHS. If this year is the same as last year, 127 people on average, will die in car crashes on the 4th.

Again, it goes without saying that if you can stay off the road on July 4th your chances for avoiding an incident increase exponentially. Even if you or the people you are with refrain from drinking, there is no way of knowing what the other drivers around you have been up to.

If you are going to consume alcohol on the holiday, do yourself and everyone else a huge favor, find a ride or call for cab. In the unlikely event that cabs are unavailable, pull out your smartphone and use a ride app like Uber or Lyft. A $20 ride is less expensive than a $20,000 DUI and putting your life and the lives of others at risk.

We wish everyone a wonderful and safe Independence Day.
