Senator Calls On FDA: Block Powdered Alcohol

The fight against powdered alcohol continues with more lawmakers and officials voicing their disapproval. A U.S. Senator from New York has joined the battle and is calling on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to block federal approval of the seemingly dangerous product called Palcohol, reports The Wall Street Journal. New York Senator Charles Schumer believes that powdered alcohol could become “the Kool-Aid of teen binge drinking”.

Last week, legislators from Vermont and Minnesota put forth measures that would ban powdered alcohol from making it to store shelves in their states. This was in response to the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) “mistakenly” approving labels for Palcohol. The maker of Palcohol, Lipsmark, has stated that it will resubmit an application.

Senator Schumer has pointed out that the FDA has the authority to overrule the TTB in regulating alcohol products, if there are significant health concerns.

“Palcohol can be easily concealed and brought into concerts, school dances and sporting events, it can be sprinkled on food and can even be snorted. Given that the federal TTB can only judge and approve new alcohol products based on labeling and taxation, it’s clear the FDA must utilize their authority to intervene when alcohol products create significant health risks - as they did with Four Loko - and stop this potentially deadly product in its tracks”, said Schumer in a news release.

If approved, Lipsmark plans to offer powdered alcohol in six varieties, including:
  • Rum
  • Vodka
  • Cosmopolitan
  • Mojito
  • Powderita
  • Lemon Drop
