Affluent Women Choose Heroin and Prescription Drugs

English: Pre-war Bayer heroin bottle, original...
Addiction affects people from all walks of life; the disease is in no way selective regarding: who you are, where you come from, your level of education, or the amount of money you have in your savings account.  Treatment centers across the country assist every demographic on the road to recovery, rich or poor, they are all equal when it comes to sobriety.

In fact, prescription narcotics and heroin are the drugs of choice amongst affluent women who have sought treatment for addiction, according to a new survey. The numbers showed that 61 percent of women had a household income of $100,000 or more.

The survey, conducted online, included 102 former patients of well respected treatment centers managed by a nationwide non-profit organization. While alcohol and prescription drugs were the leading cause of women seeking treatment, 55 percent were abusing heroin as well. Out of the women surveyed, seventy percent were initially prescribed medications for emotional and physical pain.

The women were most likely to abuse drugs and alcohol while alone, despite being married and having children.

“Female addicts often experience a lot of shame about using alcohol and drugs. They often feel they are the only ones with these problems. But we want them to know they are not alone. There are millions of women in recovery and all women deserve to get the help they need to live a healthy and productive life,” said Executive Director Michelle Maloney.
