DEA Fears Potent Marijuana Concoction Wax

With the legalization of marijuana in two states and medical marijuana in a number of others, the drug has come into the spotlight like never before. The general public is being exposed to a host of marijuana concoctions that have some people worried and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is watching closely. In California, the product known as “wax”, a potent marijuana product, is in the DEA’s crosshairs, according to ABC News.

Wax is made by spraying marijuana with butane, a highly flammable gas, in order to extract the THC. THC is one of the active chemicals found in marijuana that causes the high experienced by consuming the product. Pulling the THC out of the marijuana allows people to create highly potent products that can keep an individual high all day - with just one hit, according to the article.

“There is no weed out there that possesses the punching power that the wax does,” an anonymous undercover DEA informant told ABC News’ “Nightline.” “And it’s like smoking 20 joints of the best grade of weed that you have into one hit of the wax.”

What has many concerned in California, is business as usual in Colorado. In fact, wax is legal for anyone over the age of 21 in Colorado and is sold in recreational marijuana dispensaries.

“We have seen people have an onset of psychosis and even brain damage from that exposure to that high concentration of THC. Our concern is that this is going to spread before we get it under control”, says Gary Hill, a DEA agent in San Diego.

The X-Cup is a three-day marijuana contest held in Denver, one of the events has wax makers battle it out in order to see who makes the most potent batch.
