China Shuts Down Online Drug Stores

Counterfeit pharmaceuticals and synthetic drugs have become major problems in other parts of the world. In fact, a large percentage of synthetic drugs that find their way to the United States are produced in China. The Chinese government created a stronger Food and Drug Safety Administration earlier this year, Businessweek reports.

In China, the government announced a major crackdown on makers of fake drugs, according to the article. With the seizing of more than nine tons of raw materials used to make counterfeit pharmaceuticals, the Chinese government is showing that they mean business.

Producers of synthetic drugs in China use international courier services to export their products across the globe. After the U.S. started to crack down on synthetic drugs it opened the door for makers of the harmful drugs in other countries.

There are now countless Chinese websites selling illegal drugs and, as a result, in the last six months officials in China have arrested more than 1,300 people suspected of selling illegal drugs online. The Chinese government has shut down 140 unlicensed websites and online drug stores, which should put a significant dent in the sale of these harmful drugs.
