New OxyContin Formula

Ever since the makers of OxyContin reformulated the drug so that people cannot snort, smoke, or inject the drug, addicts have started looking for other prescription opiates that they can consume in whatever manner they like. OxyContin slowly releases its main ingredient, oxycodone, over a 12 hours period, when this drug was released to the public in 1996; people began chewing, or crushing and then snorting or injecting the drug.

Pure oxycodone pills in a 30-milligram dose, are one thing addicts are looking for now because it can still be used improperly to achieve a greater high. People in the grips of addiction will find whatever drug necessary to get a fix; heroin use will probably rise as well along with drugs like methadone and morphine. OxyContin sold for as much as $80 per 80-milligram pill on the street, a dollar a milligram, a 30-milligram tablet of oxycodone sells for $20 to $30. Drugs like OxyContin and oxycodone are not cheap at all and they are extremely dangerous

The Food and Drug Administration is requiring Purdue Pharma, the makers of OxyContin, to conduct clinical trials of the new version of OxyContin, called OxyContin OP, before the company can claim that it is less prone to be abused. Changing the formulation of their drug was a big move and ultimately it will save lives, now if we can get control of all the prescription narcotics then we'd be talking...prescription narcotics should be taken just as serious as illegal ones, they are of equal danger and are easier to acquire these days. It will be interesting to see if the new formulation of the drug has the desired effect.
