Another Life Lost to Drunk Driving

Another life was lost over the weekend in Chicago due to drugs, alcohol, and driving. At 3:30 am on Sunday a 25 year old driver in a 1992 Cadillac struck a van after running a red light and then fled the scene, the driver of the van then followed the Cadillac onto the Dan Ryan Expressway south to 95th Street, then followed it off the expressway and back north for nearly 40 blocks, said Assistant State’s Attorney Morgan Creppel. At the 5800 block of South Racine Avenue, the Cadillac swerved around another car into oncoming traffic, jumped a curb and then crashed into a building careening across an alley into a fence. The passenger in the car, 27 year old Jermain Mitchell, had numerous internal injuries and died at the scene, according to court records.

Lonzie Kent who was the driver limped into bond court with a neck brace and a black leather jacket and was charged with reckless homicide, aggravated DUI, and numerous traffic offenses. According to prosecutors, Kent tested positive for marijuana and had a blood alcohol content of .26 which is more than three times the legal limit. Kent had no life threatening injuries and was released into police custody; Criminal Court Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. set bond for Kent at $1 million.

This is another example of the dangers of drinking and driving; it isn't a joke, the stories are real and people are losing their lives. There is no such thing as a good drunk driver and the laws in place to deter people from drinking and driving are strict. Mitchell lost his live last weekend, but Kent lost his freedom for a very long time.
